Op enkele plaatsen is de historie nog letterlijk te zien: aan de oude molens, de strandwal en de dijkweg (Munnikenweg) die in de 13de eeuw is aangelegd door Floris V. Diezelfde Floris V was ook verantwoordelijk voor de bouw van de dwangburchten de Nieuwburg, waarvan de funderingen opnieuw zichtbaar zijn gemaakt, en de Middelburg, waarvan de restanten nog onder het maaiveld liggen aan de Munnikenweg.
